Some people ask why take lightweight tents instead of the older “sturdier” tents that you might have bought from Walmart or the Army-Navy Surplus store. The answer is easy: Less weight for you!

Tents have been a big part of our lives and usually families have that raspy, old, tattered tent that has been sitting in the attic over the years. It’s been handed down since the seventies and now a trip is coming up that you’ve been invited to. What to do? Use to old, barely recognizable shelter that’s been in your family for years? Or is it time to create a new tradition in the ultralight era?

The best reason to get a new ultralight tent is versatility. These new designs are built not only to be lightweight in nature but to be easy to carry, deploy, and pack up. Most of the newer styles tend to be made of tougher yet more flexible materials and extremely lightweight.

Some newer tents even have removable parts allowing them to be even more compact and less burdensome. The lighter you go the less you have to carry. And the less you have to carry the more room you have for food and water – 2 extremely important, must have items.

However most people still are wary of new lightweight tents because of the fact that they can be slightly “open” to the elements. This can be uncomfortable at first because people tend to lose their sense of security. But sleeping in the open, under a tarp, or in a lightweight tent can open you up to nature and make your trip outdoors a whole new experience.
